Machado, Helena & Noronha, Susana (2025) “Faces of the tropics: facial recognition, identity and refusal in Mexico”, cultural geographies (ahead of print)

Abstract: This paper investigates ‘AI refusal’ by analysing how colonial and racialised logics inform the surveillance and representation of Mexicans through facial recognition technologies. Blending conventional academic analysis with a fictional vignette and a visual triptych, the paper offers a creative-critical approach to resistance. The vignette evokes the emotional and embodied impacts of surveillance, while the triptych employs visual metaphors to challenge reductive representations and affirm selfhood across the lifespan. Together, these methods provide cultural geographers with tools to examine the affective, symbolic and material dimensions of surveillance, resistance and collective memory.

It was a platform for promoting and discussing the scientific, social, cultural, and economic impact of research in Portugal, exploring and sharing common aspects of science, innovation, and society, to inspire new ideas and foster transformative collaborations.

In an increasingly complex world, where global challenges demanded transformative solutions, the theme “Science, Innovation and Society” invited a comprehensive reflection on the structuring role of science in the development of societies.

To address these questions, the authors introduce the concept of “ethical assemblages,” offering fresh perspectives on the complexities of AI ethics and their impact on socio-technoscientific structures.

“Techno-authoritarian imaginaries in Latin America: the contestation of facial recognition technologies”. Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas 107 (2025): 9-27.

Abstract: In the context of the global expansion of facial recognition technologies, civil society organisations have taken action to challenge their use, citing risks of mass surveillance, threats to privacy and civil liberties, and inequalities and discrimination. This article expands knowledge about the contestation of facial recognition technologies beyond the cases of the US and Europe, analysing the contestation of civil society organisations in Latin America. It concludes that “techno-authoritarian imaginaries” are projected, revealing tensions and structural conflicts strongly marked by the political and social context, involving science and technological development, governments, companies, citizens and activism.
